Velominati Super Prestige

The Velominati Super Prestige is a season-long competition wherein readers will be submitting their predictions for the top five finishers of each qualifying race.  In order to qualify, your picks via the VSP Picks form above the posts section of the VSP Event article pertaining to the race in question by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight on the day of the race start. These articles are clearly marked and are generally posted at least 72 hours in advance of each event. The current leader of the competition has the honor of posting on the site bearing the VSP Leader’s badge; winners of select races (the monuments and Grand Tours) similarly gain the honor of posting with a dedicated badge for the remainder of the year. Prizes may be given for key events; these prizes will be announced on the associated VSP Event. Points will be tallied as the season progresses and the winner will be announced after Paris-Tours. Prizes to be determined.

Scoring (One-Day Races)

Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings of each race by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the race. Regular Points Points will be scored in reverse order of finishing order: 7 points for first place, 5 points for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, and 2 for fifth.  Readers will also earn 1 bonus point for every other rider named in the top five, regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner.

Scoring (Grand Tours)

Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings on General Classification of each Grand Tour by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the first stage or prologue. Points Points will be scored as follows based on the final G.C of the race: 20 points for first place, 15 for second, 10 for third, 7 for fourth, and 5 for fifth; plus 3 points per rider in the top five regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Changing of the Picks* Contestants are allowed to make line up changes on one of the rest days of the Grand Tours but not both. These changes will come with a point penalty.  You will be allotted one (1) rest day to make swaps in grand tours; you may pick either the first or second rest day. The penalties for swapping will be lower for the first rest day than the second. This will allow you to swap out a rider(s) who gets caught in some first week nervousness  with a 5 point penalty for each swap. Or make some go for broke/doomed to fail break-away swap on the second rest day for a 10 point penalty for each swap. That’s it. You make one swap or five on either rest day for the corresponding 5 or 10 point penalty per swap. Additionally, if one of your riders crashes out, DNF’s, or DNS’s, you may swap them out on a rest day with corresponding penalties if you haven’t already used up your one rest day swap. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner. Minor Stages We will be posting VSP’s for minor stages as well. Scoring is similar to one-day racing, except no bonus points are in play for getting the rider in the wrong placing.

Scoring (Minor Stage Races)

Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings on General Classification of each Minor Stage Race (less than three weeks) by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the first stage or prologue. Regular Points Points will be scored in reverse order of finishing order: 10 points for first place, 8 for second, 7 for third, 5 for fourth, and 3 for fifth; plus two bonus points per rider in the top five regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner.

*The Changing of the Picks rules are designed to promote fair play and keep the competition fun and open throughout the three-week race.  Abuse of these rules will be managed through the “Piti Principle”: if we we feel you are attempting to exploit loopholes or otherwise take advantage of the Changing of the Picks rules, we will penalize you by deducting points from your total score. Much like the UCI doping suspensions, the amount of points deducted will be based on how egregious the abuse was.

@Mike_P Nah, talk is that Wiggo has been bulking up for a crack at PR (although, if they’d wanted bulk, I don’t know why they didn’t ask me).

He hasn’t switched to Lampre has he?

  2. @Chris

As if the sport isn’t dangerous enough, you get idiots like this…

Isn’t the idiot also wearing a Varsity jacket from Happy Days ??

Better glue your tyres on back to front again, they might need you yet, with their current level of attrition

Speaking of that, why is there no Keepers Tour this year (I’m sure this has been debated endlessly while I’ve been sailing the winter away…)

  4. @Dr C No KT this year as it would have coincided with the US book launch. No KT has resulted in a lot less incentive to get out training in the wind and rain. I’m back on it now though.

The tubs need some love at the moment. They’re facing the right direction but one is full of pit stop and the other has a 20 mile slow puncture.

Will you be joining us more often now that the racing is getting going again or is there still nothing quite like messing about in boats?

Classics season means V-blethering, so I am afraid I am back for the summer – I’m sure I can mix the two

Does the pitstop work well? Have you now got a tubeless tub aka Stan’s system? You haven’t jammed it into the slow leaking tub yet?

  6. @Dr C Tubeless tub? Good god man, do I look like an innovator? It’s belt and braces for me, tube and sealant.

Pitstop seems to be working OK, it’s been in their since October and hasn’t solidified at the lowest point during the period of sloth and bloating that was November (and er February and a good chunk of March).

Looking forward to much V-blethering. We’ll also have to get a Cogal date in the diary so you can’t come up with any weak excuses like being on call. (if you’re up for a real challenge you can come and join me riding from Manchester to London in September.

  7. @JCM

Just saw this.  If you have not watched this video, watch it now.  Perfect pre-ride warm up for any day, any condition, any state of mind.

  8. @seemunkee Me too! Tied for third is looking pretty good right now. Can I sustain it on the cobbles this weekend? Maybe I can hold on to your wheel and surge past in the velodrome!

  9. Hi Keepers,

I’m listed in the GC VSP twice:  at #109 with 16 points and #243 with 2 points.  If possible, could those be combined to get me into the top 100?  I believe they are both me.

    Thanks,

    imakecircles

  10. @seemunkee

Need to take a screenshot of the standing so I can remember that at one point I was on top.

Holy Joop Zoetemelk! I just checked and am so surprised to be on the podium! I only hope I make it to the showers next weekend… Can’t wait PR has to be my favorite race. Good luck all!

  11. @MJ Moquin

Is the full standings list anywhere?

Click on the ellipsis between the top group and the lanterne rouge in the 2014 standings above.

  12. Gilbert won Brabantse Pijl today.  Could he be poised for another Ardennes rampage?

  13. @frank

    @blackpooltower

@Ron Agreed, ‘not black’ is a plus these days. Also, is it me or are a few to many teams ‘mixing things up a bit with asymmetric sleeves’? I no like.

I puke in my mouth a little bit every time I see the Trek kit. Even with Fabian in it, it looks crap. He better not win Roubaix in that fucking thing. It would be a disgrace. Hopefully he has the sense to sit up and let someone else take it should he find himself in that situation.

Fuck, I’d rather have someone test positive than win in that shit; it would be less damaging to the sport.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I spotted one of their riders at Amstel in one white legwarmer and one black.  Holy Mother of Merckx, I know they are being paid to wear it, but have they no self respect?  I thought I might have have been mistaken until I found the sad evidence on their website.  I’m not posting a photo for fear of it encouraging folks to take their eyes out with rusty forks.

The Ad they’ve been running in Cyclist recently is similar.  Even with a grim combination of clothing you’d have thought they’d at least have clothing straight before actually using a photo.

  15. Only 2/5ths of the way thru VSP and more exciting things to happen to this guy.

  16. @Gianni, hey good morning! It seems the  Mai tai’s that chased the  Tripels have  not impaired your lazer like mind for the VSP calculations. Im sure the keepers have been swamped with the book debut or secret keeper stuff but I was wondering if after the Amstel Gold the totals were changed? I’m sure this weeks 3 races will tie up the quantum calculations so I will be patient but I am dying to know if Seemonkey is still standing on my toes on the podium…

Also, I’d so like to make it to NYC but for reasons beyond my control there is only a 10% chance.  I’m hoping you will meet the 200/100 crew – Xyxax, Buck, Roger etc. you will be inspired and humbled, and they will feel no pain to be in your august presence!

  17. Just so I can see how badly I’m doing, is there a complete list of standings so far? I just really, really want to see how much chance I have of spending my own money on wheels and bikes this year! The VMH will be pleased.

  18. @Frank Hey, hope you are well.  I’m having some problems with VSP (and website in general)… in that posts aren’t showing up, and it isn’t allowing me to submit picks… it happened with women’s Flèche Wallone and is happening with La Doyenne…. have tried it with Chrome, Explorer, Firefox, Safari and iPad… with same effect.  Is it me, or are their pixies in the system?  Thanks

  19. should be ‘there’ rather than ‘their’ (obviously) in last post.  Would hate to irritate the pedants.

  20. Here are the VSP standings post Fleche Wallone, for 2014. I have plied the VSP generator again, let’s hope it will play nice.

    [vsp_gc year=”2014″/]

  21. Rob at 52 points? Are we sure that is our Rob? I’m so deep in the weeds this year, I’m just above Dragon City.

Rob we will miss you in NYC. It would be a huge thrill to meet any of the 200/100 boys. I am not worthy.

  22. #8?! At 51 points?! Really?! How did that happen?! That makes getting dropped by a Velominata, on a hill north of San Antonio this morning during a group ride, feel a little better. Getting dropped by a Velominata isn’t a big deal when you are an aspiring 54-years old Velominati, but then she says, “That was a tough ride! I haven’t been on my bike in nine-months!”

  23. @Gianni  yes, a new avatar (don’t ask) and who’d a thunk still in the top 10, not for long I bet….

No, no completely worthy. Like minds and good guys that you will be at home with. Have a ball!

  24. @Minnesota Expat  I may have to drop you too if you and piwakawaka don’t get off my wheel cause I’m just hanging on by the skin of my teeth in the pace line to catch Tom Mc.

But back to the real world – I always take it as a sort of badge of honor when I get dropped by the ladies and I had the pleasure of being dropped by some of the the best back in the day!

  25. Oh, I have no problem getting dropped by a Velominata, it was the “nine-months” and “spin classes” that crushed me. I have a hard-drive full of ride profile data for the last year that look like waves in the ocean. Every other night after work, lap after lap on a two-mile circuit, up and down, up and down, up and down, until my lungs and guns are screaming. And I got SMOKED!

  26. @Minnesota Expat yes, man or woman, some will always train more/harder – there is always next winter to pass her, no?

Seriously, I read something while killing time in the book store at the magazine rack. It was by a newbie writing about doing the NY Grand Fondo in the rain and running shoes. Needless to say he DNFed but after 80 tough miles including the Bear mountain climb. Having limped up that with Buck Rogers on his West Point cogal I can’t imagine how this guy was feeling?

The point is that in the end he summed it up really well. The ride was not about beating others but really about conquering oneself. That is why when I get dropped it’s never about the person dropping me but what I was doing or not doing to let it happen.  And yes when it’s some smokin lady blowing by it does bend the mind a bit!

  27. @Rob

But back to the real world – I always take it as a sort of badge of honor when I get dropped by the ladies and I had the pleasure of being dropped by some of the the best back in the day!

Oh, there are some real female thoroughbreds in our 80+ kilometer Saturday morning “A” group. I’m within 3kph of a self-upgrade to the A-group and I look forward to continuing to get my butt kicked again every Saturday morning!

  28. @Rob

I read the same piece, it was in Bicycle magazine. While his effort was laudable, I had a hard time time getting past his lack of research and preparation for something of that magnitude.

Nonetheless, I agree, the “take away” applies across the spectrum of weekend warrior athletes, why are we doing this, are we challenging ourselves, and are we improving?

Alright. That’s it. I’m riding with the “A” group this weekend.
