Velominati Super Prestige
The Velominati Super Prestige is a season-long competition wherein readers will be submitting their predictions for the top five finishers of each qualifying race. In order to qualify, your picks via the VSP Picks form above the posts section of the VSP Event article pertaining to the race in question by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight on the day of the race start. These articles are clearly marked and are generally posted at least 72 hours in advance of each event. The current leader of the competition has the honor of posting on the site bearing the VSP Leader’s badge; winners of select races (the monuments and Grand Tours) similarly gain the honor of posting with a dedicated badge for the remainder of the year. Prizes may be given for key events; these prizes will be announced on the associated VSP Event. Points will be tallied as the season progresses and the winner will be announced after Paris-Tours. Prizes to be determined.
Scoring (One-Day Races)
Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings of each race by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the race. Regular Points Points will be scored in reverse order of finishing order: 7 points for first place, 5 points for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, and 2 for fifth. Readers will also earn 1 bonus point for every other rider named in the top five, regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner.
Scoring (Grand Tours)
Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings on General Classification of each Grand Tour by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the first stage or prologue. Points Points will be scored as follows based on the final G.C of the race: 20 points for first place, 15 for second, 10 for third, 7 for fourth, and 5 for fifth; plus 3 points per rider in the top five regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Changing of the Picks* Contestants are allowed to make line up changes on one of the rest days of the Grand Tours but not both. These changes will come with a point penalty. You will be allotted one (1) rest day to make swaps in grand tours; you may pick either the first or second rest day. The penalties for swapping will be lower for the first rest day than the second. This will allow you to swap out a rider(s) who gets caught in some first week nervousness with a 5 point penalty for each swap. Or make some go for broke/doomed to fail break-away swap on the second rest day for a 10 point penalty for each swap. That’s it. You make one swap or five on either rest day for the corresponding 5 or 10 point penalty per swap. Additionally, if one of your riders crashes out, DNF’s, or DNS’s, you may swap them out on a rest day with corresponding penalties if you haven’t already used up your one rest day swap. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner. Minor Stages We will be posting VSP’s for minor stages as well. Scoring is similar to one-day racing, except no bonus points are in play for getting the rider in the wrong placing.
Scoring (Minor Stage Races)
Readers who wish to enter shall enter their predictions for the top five placings on General Classification of each Minor Stage Race (less than three weeks) by the time the countdown clock goes to zero at midnight PDT on the day of the first stage or prologue. Regular Points Points will be scored in reverse order of finishing order: 10 points for first place, 8 for second, 7 for third, 5 for fourth, and 3 for fifth; plus two bonus points per rider in the top five regardless of the rider’s placing, but riders are not scored twice. Tie Breaking In the event of a tie, the first reader to submit their predictions will be named the winner.

*The Changing of the Picks rules are designed to promote fair play and keep the competition fun and open throughout the three-week race. Abuse of these rules will be managed through the “Piti Principle”: if we we feel you are attempting to exploit loopholes or otherwise take advantage of the Changing of the Picks rules, we will penalize you by deducting points from your total score. Much like the UCI doping suspensions, the amount of points deducted will be based on how egregious the abuse was.
@RobSandy
I always thought that the shape of this will not be formed till Stage 9 is done.
@KogaLover
Major #26 violation, should be drive side to camera!
@sthilzy
The whole pic mystifies me. Man? Woman? Hipster? What are they doing? Clearly they don’t want to get their nice pink trainers wet, but thje bike looks like a decent bit of kit.I hardly think it’s a case of dipping one’s bike in the Atlantic after having ridden across the US. A bit of shit on the rear tire? That’s what grass is for.
Maybe it’s a rare sighting of Frank?
Yup, Sky may have an awkward situation on their hands if GT gets yellow today by almost a minute.
@Teocalli
Definitely an interesting situation, I can’t see GT being given anything other than full support at least until Froome has emerged from the pave intact. Rowe will be an important player that day. After that, how knows but if Froome loses more time on the cobbles he may be forced into another long range attack to make up the time.
The iron of McQuaid telling Brailsford “his credibility isn’t as high as he might think it is” is beautiful.
Meanwhile, Cookson meekly implores the squalling children to play nicely.
@chris
I’d love to see Sky backing G over Froome, but even if he is ahead post-Stage 9, I can’t see Froome playing second fiddle to anyone. I mean, look at 2012, when he was Wiggo’s domestique, and he still attacked. Now he’s chasing Title No. 5, I can’t see his ego deflating enough to support G, regardless of what the rest of the team do.
@mulebeatsdrums
To be fair to Froome I don’t think you can accuse him of an over inflated ego. Certainly not in the context of some of his predecessors.
@mulebeatsdrums
I wasn’t suggesting Froome would play second fiddle to anyone, more that Sky would be mad not to at least hedge their bets by supporting GT as well until at after Roubaix at least. There’s no guarantee that Froome won’t lose time there and placing all the eggs in one basket would be disastrous. Barring GT suffering any mishaps, he should reach the mountains with an advantage over Froome.
Froome comes across as a very different bloke to the brash unknown who let his other half get into a twitter spat with Mrs Wiggins in 2012. Whether or not he’s changed enough to follow team orders is another thing.
@chris
To be fair to Froome, it was just one day and one attack – it was hardly stuff of the Badger repeatedly attacking LeMond (until he cried). And he was attacking the 2nd placed rider – Nibali – to try and put him away. He didn’t realise he was also putting his team leader in trouble!
But…with the cobbles coming…Go G!
@RobSandy
True, but you got the impression that he he was straining at the leash on a number of occasions.
Perhaps that was just result of the media portrayal or not being in control of Ms. Cound’s twittering.
As for the cobbles, I’ll be waving a big Welsh Union Jack and cheering GT on!
@chris
I wish they’d kept the wives out if it!
Judging by G’s manner and approach I think he is similarly straining at the leash. But he wont be attacking his team leader – he doesn’t need to, he already has a 50 second gap with a day on the cobbles and an ITT to come.
It’s going to be fascinating.
Worth noting Tom D finding himself in a very good situation too.
@RobSandy @Chris
….and Valverde……….. (lights touch paper and stands back)……..
@wiscot
Saw this guy washing his bike in Zurich lake (fresh water indeed) couple of days ago when walking from the office to the train station. Also noted the carbon BMC frame, so not cheap. Looked like he was washing his pedals. And I hope I am forgiven for not taking the picture from the drive-side!
@RobSandy
Sky have to keep GT and CF in play. Who know’s what’ll happen? As it was, CF was damn lucky not to crash out on Stage 1. It’s early days so they’ll be telling both to stay up there and not lose any time.
Tommy D is lurking. Nibali didn’t do so bad in the TT considering his team broke up early. QS f*cked up yesterday and coulda/shoulda won. Sagan is just having fun.
@wiscot
I wonder if after the first hill the top 3 could be 1. G 2. Tom D 3. Uran
Damn. One of my faves Tiesj Benoot is out. Looked a real mess after the crash yesterday. Cav is struggling. So happy to see Chavanel giving it some Tommy V in terms of giving it a go. Great PR for Direct Energie. He deserves a stage win. I mean, damn, 18 Tours. That’s incredible.
I think Cav will finish his career with 30 Tour wins. Had he not crashed out in 14 and 17 I think he could have challenged Marckx’s record of 34, but the young guns like Gaviria are just too quick these days.
https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2018/jul/10/high-fashion-cycling-sunglasses-kim-kardashian-princess-anne-bella-hadid-performance-shades
Good God. Cycling sunnies are for wearing on the bike. If there’s no bike within your vicinity and you’re not wearing cycling gear then you just look like a dick. Mind you, if Hadid and any Kardashian do something, that’s usually a good enough reason not to do it. As for Princess Anne . . . .
@wiscot
Arrrgh – where is the Delete Post button……..
@Teocalli
Take your sunglasses off – that might help! ;-)
@wiscot
Oh yikes. The only reason I wear my cycling sunglasses off the bike is because they have prescription inserts, and I refuse to fork out for non-cycling prescription sunglasses for the, what, three weeks a year it’s actually sunny enough to warrant them in the UK.
A couple of click-throughs from that article did bring up this wonderful image of Tommy Simpson casually deliberately fighting the law:
The stylish bastard.
@mulebeatsdrums
FFS look how cool he is.
This photo should be required study for the budding Velominatus.
@mulebeatsdrums
Whoa! Nice pic. Yes indeed, Tom S looks the business. Look at that cap. Perfect. Did you see the abominations Bahrain-Merida were wearing at the Tour? We’re cyclists, not skateboaders FFS.
Even the other three dudes seem pretty styling. Socks and sandals is very hard to pull off, but the man with the cane does it nicely.
Tommy’s probably being cautioned for putting so many others in the pain cave. Or breaking the speed limit. Or not having a bell on his bike.
But here’s the issue. It looks like it might be an outdoor track in England. Simpson’s riding a road bike. Any info on the what/where?
@RobSandy
I KNOW. My desktop bacground is a photo of him taking a nap with his casquette pulled over his eyes, under a sign that reads “DÉFENSE DE COURIR” (“DO NOT RUN”). Beautiful.
@wiscot
According to the original article, it’s from the 1964 Corona Grand Prix at Crystal Palace. The article is A Life In Pictures, so go buck wild!
Re caps, I forget which team it is, but one of the women’s teams have got those hideous skateboard caps too. I just don’t see the point of them. In general, as well as in cycling.
@mulebeatsdrums
Thanks for the link, great photos and article. I assumed if wiscot was asking details of the what/where, then no one would know.
@MangoDave
Welcome. Pure serendipity that I clicked through.
Also spotted this little history of Condor on Twitter earlier: https://www.casquette.co.uk/know-how/dusty-springfield-mick-jagger-and-70-years-of-condor-cycles. Some nice photos in there.
@MangoDave
What a strong position Geraint Thomas is in…
This is how to rock the Maillot Jaune, kids.
@RobSandy
Agreed. Just the right amount of yellow. Any more would be too much.
after Gaviria’s relegaton today, that’s another green jersey for Sagan.
@Cary
No one in the current pro peleton can challenge Sagan over the full 3 weeks anyway. Zabel was interviewed about and said he reckons Sagan will win 10 green jerseys.
Nice to Van Vleuten bossing the Giro Rosa after I thought about picking her to win on my VSP and the putting her in 2nd. Doh.
Richie Porte out? Collar bone of shoulder and they have not got to the cobbles yet. Went to make a cup of tea and missed it but seems a few are out Porte, Rohas, Marczinski. Confirmed Porte out. Bummer.
@Teocalli
The crash appeared to involve a spectator.
Will they be awarding time bonuses to anyone that doesn’t fall off?
Unfortunately not watching it live, just the cycling news feed whilst trying to work. It sounds like carnage.
Breath taking stage. Best racing so far, fast and furious.
@chris
Somewhat. Bardet has had to chase back 4 times. Landa just went down hard on the open road.
Whoa! This one’s living up to its bad expectations. Gutted for Porte. I wanted people to lose time, not crash out. Just as well it’s not wet . . .
@wiscot
The dust and speed on the normal roads seem to be causing more problems than the cobbles.
Oh, and one more thing. I get Gaviria being relegated yesterday, but Greipel? He held his line. There was no gap (deliberately by AG, he knows what he was doing) yet Gaviria tries to come through a gap that’s not there and starts headbutting AG. Bad call by commissaires.
@wiscot
Greipel’s foul was earlier but he seemed to be in the right on that one too.
@wiscot
Haven’t seen it since it happened but from memory, Greipel was moving across the road right to left to pick up Sagan’s wheel. I suspect the commissaires decided that he should have known that Gaviria was coming up the inside and not carried on coming across him.
It could also have been what pushed Gaviria to use his head.
Chapeau to Quintana, still in there with one sector to go……
So Porte has gone and Rigoberto has lost a stack of time but apart from that the GC looks to be much the same as yesterday. Can’t wait to watch it.
Results from Giro Rosa. Stormer for @Sthilzy.
and standings
Virtual Standings on first rest day. Clearly a lot to be sorted but @mulebeatsdrums in a solo breakaway with the bunch clearly out for a 221 Km stage…….
Hmmm – don’t know what happened there…..
Can you post up our choices again, I’ve forgotten who I picked.
I believe that I should get an additional point for Guarnier, who I had slotted third but finished fifth.
@Rick
I’ll check, prolly my tryping…….
@Rick
Yup I got the u and a the wrong way round on your picks…….
