If Gatorade had any marketing sense whatsoever, they would have plastered photos of this pair all over every billboard in Europe.

The founder of Velominati and curator of The Rules, Frank was born in the Dutch colonies of Minnesota. His boundless physical talents are carefully canceled out by his equally boundless enthusiasm for drinking. Coffee, beer, wine, if it’s in a container, he will enjoy it, a lot of it. He currently lives in Seattle. He loves riding in the rain and scheduling visits with the Man with the Hammer just to be reminded of the privilege it is to feel completely depleted. He holds down a technology job the description of which no-one really understands and his interests outside of Cycling and drinking are Cycling and drinking. As devoted aesthete, the only thing more important to him than riding a bike well is looking good doing it. Frank is co-author along with the other Keepers of the Cog of the popular book, The Rules, The Way of the Cycling Disciple and also writes a monthly column for the magazine, Cyclist. He is also currently working on the first follow-up to The Rules, tentatively entitled The Hardmen. Email him directly at rouleur@velominati.com.

  • All - Yes, that's me ... a much younger me (today is my birthday and I'm ... uh ... now older than what used to be the national maximum speed limit).  And yes, I still have the shirt. :-) Pic is from 1992 Tour Dupont.  Taken at a party for riders that we were invited to after the final TT stage in Washington DC.

    Back in the day. :-)

You are the man with the man! And that shirt is classic too!!

That is exactly what I was thinking!!! What a shirt you’ve got on! That would be the thrift store find of the century, though who would ever give that up?

  • My favourite Gianni Bugno story is about how Gerard Vroomen wrote to him to suggest that Cervelo (then in their infancy) could make him a better bike.  Vroomen did not have an address and so just addressed the letter:

    Gianni Bugno

    World Cycling Champion

    Italy.

It reached him and he wrote a reply.   He also subsequently rode a Cervelo I believe.  But that is less important than the letter-writing.
