Anatomy of a Photo: Sleepless in Belgium

Team Quickstep gets sleepy

I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more Rule #5.

Thanks to Michael for bringing this matter to our attention.

frank

The founder of Velominati and curator of The Rules, Frank was born in the Dutch colonies of Minnesota. His boundless physical talents are carefully canceled out by his equally boundless enthusiasm for drinking. Coffee, beer, wine, if it’s in a container, he will enjoy it, a lot of it. He currently lives in Seattle. He loves riding in the rain and scheduling visits with the Man with the Hammer just to be reminded of the privilege it is to feel completely depleted. He holds down a technology job the description of which no-one really understands and his interests outside of Cycling and drinking are Cycling and drinking. As devoted aesthete, the only thing more important to him than riding a bike well is looking good doing it. Frank is co-author along with the other Keepers of the Cog of the popular book, The Rules, The Way of the Cycling Disciple and also writes a monthly column for the magazine, Cyclist. He is also currently working on the first follow-up to The Rules, tentatively entitled The Hardmen. Email him directly at rouleur@velominati.com.

    Wow, where did that Cipo photo appear? In regular magazines? Cycling magazines?

    Ron, it was published in English magazine Cycle Sport - at first as you see it there in all it's naked glory, but later issues had strategic black stripes over the nipples. It was one of a series of risque Northwave ads of the mid-late 90s. I'll see if I can dig the others out for your edification.

  • Well, you know what they say; "what goes on at Le Tour, stays at Le Tour . . . "

  • @sgt
    No one's does.

    @all
    I can't decide if Tom Booner is pulling away from Niki or pushing into Gert.

    The irony of the fact that in Flemish, "Boonen" is pronounced "Bone-en" is not lost on me, by the way.

    Completely coincidentally, I was just reading Procycling #1 (April '99) and what should be on the back cover?

  • @Marko
    You're right - Devo is cool and their schtick involves looking dorky. I'm actually a pretty big Devo fan.

    Wow, some of those other bike related ads are pretty damn goofy. I don't what they're thinking...

  • @frank

    I love that in the first ad, the "roman warrior one", you can see the tan lines from his bibs on the 'ol guns.

    Out of all of the ads posted, the Eddy Merckx cannibal one is probably the "least bad", as cannibalism and blood are always fun.

    @sgt

    Does this ad infer that I am supposed to oil up every time I throw on my Sidi's? I guess it would be one way to help prevent road rash, as you'd just slide along...

  • Issue 2 of Procycling, May 1999 - here's the edited version! Ridiculous!
