Gelukkig Sinterklaas

December 6th is possibly the biggest holiday of the year for the Dutch. We put out our shoe, we write gedichten, we play pranks on each other, and we exchange gifts. As luck would have it, the good old Sint made a stop by the Velominati Headquarters in Seattle and left me an absurdly large bottle of dry lube; the the point where I felt like I need to explain what it is for. (I use a lot of that stuff, you know, on my chain – because I ride in the rain every day this time of year. I swear.)

Take a dive into the archives and have a look at our 2010 article on the subject for a full background on why December 6th is the real Christmas and why the Dutch (and I assume at least the Belgians) rule so much harder at holidays than the rest of the world, except maybe the Jewish community, since they figured out how to make the gift-giving last an entire month and everyone knows that’s pretty hard-core.

In any case, from the bottom of my heart, thanks to everyone in our humble little community, and I wish you each a Gelukkig Sinterklaas.

The founder of Velominati and curator of The Rules, Frank was born in the Dutch colonies of Minnesota. His boundless physical talents are carefully canceled out by his equally boundless enthusiasm for drinking. Coffee, beer, wine, if it’s in a container, he will enjoy it, a lot of it. He currently lives in Seattle. He loves riding in the rain and scheduling visits with the Man with the Hammer just to be reminded of the privilege it is to feel completely depleted. He holds down a technology job the description of which no-one really understands and his interests outside of Cycling and drinking are Cycling and drinking. As devoted aesthete, the only thing more important to him than riding a bike well is looking good doing it. Frank is co-author along with the other Keepers of the Cog of the popular book, The Rules, The Way of the Cycling Disciple and also writes a monthly column for the magazine, Cyclist. He is also currently working on the first follow-up to The Rules, tentatively entitled The Hardmen. Email him directly at rouleur@velominati.com.

@cognition bad weather? It's 8:30pm and 28 degrees Celsius here

Bitter Texas Gulf Coast winter here - finished work early and went for a ride under partly cloudy skies and 25C.  I know, an amazing display of discipline.

  • Since we're talking about Christmas - nothing to do with cycling but this is quite funny.

Before you do, you have to first appreciate this is a lady who suffers from Tourette's Syndrome (not entirely the sweary type, although she does do quite a bit of that as well). Biscuit is her most dominant theme, and bins feature heavily as well.

She has a blog and twitter account where she puts a selection of her strange daily utterances. There's also a twitter account called @ticbot which you can follow or tweet to and will give you a random reply from her list of tics. Anything from "We need to talk about biscuits" to "Put your hands on the buttocks of a sheepdog named Lil". Although ticbot has been taken down by Twitter several times for its content.

It's very funny and it's meant to be - laughing with rather than at. In between the tics she is very eloquent, sees the humour and does it to try to raise awareness and generally get something positive out of something that is more than a little difficult. Tourettes is when your head explode with fairies, apparently.

  • Awright, random thought in random thread. All the bike mags have end of the year awards and stuff in them, and Velonews has Marianne Vos as rider of the year. I just can't stop looking at her tits.

You're cruel.  After your post I made a bee line to the online site and their one photo cuts off just below the shoulders.
    Painful.

Man I am BORED!  When does the Rusty Chain Award come out?  Hell, racing starts in just over a month Down Under!

  • Here you go. Truth of the matter is that I have bigger tits than she does. But I just can't stop looking at hers.

    Ah.

There be a place in Aus named St. Kilda. Has probably the busiest road cycling traffic volume in the world.

Where are the sheep? It can't really be St Kilda if there's no sheep.
