Velominati Photo Contest: Season 2012
Truth be told, how many of us can resist a photo of ourselves Looking Fantastic on the bike? How many of us can resist the temptation of taking our eyes off the road and stealing a glimpse of ourselves in a shop window as we pass by? Not me, but then again a strong case could be made for my being a narcissist and I freely admit that I love looking at photos of myself riding, though this is mostly because they take me back to the experience I was having at the time.
This time of year has us looking back at the season past and getting nostalgic about the best rides and moments of the year. In the coming Holiday week, the Keepers will be naming The V Moment and the Anti-V Moment of the year, but we thought we’d give the community an opportunity to get a bit narcissistic and share our favorite photos from 2012.
With that, we announce the first annual Velominati Photo Contest. To enter, post your favorite photo(s) from 2012 below and The Keepers will monitor the conversation and use our judgement to name a winner on January 1st, 2013. The winner will receive a free pair of Witte V-Socks (available in the first quarter of next year) and the top three photos will be offered as VVallpapers. Just as with the VSP, The Keepers can post photos and are eligible to win, of course, but we are excluded from the prizes.
Even as I write this I know we won’t be able to resist posting photos of ourselves laying down The V; I already did it in the lead photo of this article. Nevertheless, the photos don’t have to be of yourself, they can be of anything so long as you took the photo or you have permission from the photographer to share it.
Have at it and so far so good on the world not ending.
Pre-dawn, random mid winter Thursday morning in the Adelaide Hills trying to regain some fitness after breaking my collarbone at Easter. Had no idea the photographer was there until I’d gone all the way past him & heard the clicking of the shutter.

Yup, nothing’s topping that.
Me in my first CAT3 race, Grand Prix of Beverly (MA) – It was a rude awakening
Photo of me in 1994-5 at the Oregon State Crit Champs. Spent 20min bridging between the field and the lead group. It’s not from this year, but I found it this year (does that count?)
@Mikael Liddy
We might have a 2 way tie. What a great picture!
@RedRanger
agreed.
I offer this one for who it is (@Rob) and where it is (Rt 100 in V-ermont).
For this year 2012. A couple good shots.
Buddy Will riding up Mt.Diablo searching for snow. We get turned back by rangers due to the road being closed.
Mr.Lewis scoffing at the mileage and hill grade.
Self-Portrait of me practicing for cyclocross season
@itburns
This gets my vote. Do we get a vote?
OK, I’ll bite.
Me at the Adidas America campus:
@Velosophe
Mate, possibly the best reason yet to take some time off the bike. Stay safe, and best wishes. I’ll turn a crank for you tomorrow. Cheers.
@Gianni
Not really staged – we just rode is a second and third time until they looked that fucking badass.
@frank
Thanks! I’m home now, on holiday with the family. The snow should clear soon and I will be back at it! Although I miss my Afghan comrades, it’s good to be back!
@girl
When you vote for a photo I took, then HELL YES, you get a vote.
@scaler911
I’ve been trying to work out an AOP on that for half a year. Such a classic photo. The broom stick to stiffen the bars, one DT shifter, the front Zipp but rear replacement after a puncture, my favorite Sidi’s ever, the rolled up shorts, the Briko stingers, the dried spit all over you.
Its fucking classic fucking 90’s cool. Massive chapeau.
@frank
OK, staged was too strong a word…you boys were badass, even the first time up.
@Velosophe
Holy shit. You and Aldo the Apache, what a photo. I guess you haven’t been riding. Enjoy your time home, maybe it’s not too snowy there to get a ride in.
@mcsqueak
You’ve come far, Pedalwan. (You’re not my Pedalwan – that’s @Scaler911’s honor, but you’re still a Pedalwan.)
@Velosophe
I hope Aldo is home, too. And you’re anon buddies. Aldo looks fucking badass. When I need a bodyguard, I’ll look him up.
@tomevental
Amazing day for you in Miami! Unbelievable, going for a ride with Cipo!
DiLuca I could pass on, he should be relegated to just grand fondos but Super Mario, that would be such a fun moment. Well done to get in it, get in the front and fondle the trophy, at least.
This has to be in the running. photo by Harminator?
@frank
Thanks mate! Means a lot. Scaler certainly has his work cut out for him.

Not to mention the big ‘ol chainring and the little bitty cassette. And them guns!
@RedRanger
Where is that exactly? Any chance by the old stage route, AZ/N.M. border? I swear I’ve been there. On second thought, if there is a paved park it can’t be.
@Gianni
Yes Gianni, Totally Badass. If he did that in front of me I might have wet myself.
But not my pic, unfortunately. Somewhere from the interwebz. I forget now.
@frank
Chapeau. Il peut y avoir seulement un.

Lost in translation and in meaning, The comment was intended to be humerus, and not meant to get anyones kickers in a twist.
The photos are great by the way.
@G’rilla
How come you’re running and not pedalling wit’ dat bike?
Trying to find some of Pedale’s magic. We love you, man.

No airbags, we will die like heros
This is me winning a race in October 1984. Somewhere near Wheeling WV.
I just found it and scanned it a few days ago. It was shot with a point and shoot on film, I think by my sister. I was 16 years old. One of the benefits of having a father who was a doctor is that I was riding a Colnago with Campy Nuovo Record. Other notes: black Modolo brakes, possibly Duegi wooden soled shoes but they may be Diadora. The shorts are a little short due to it being a skinsuit and I’m a little bummed about the mismatched tires, but I could Photoshop those. The frame was a strange model with shifters up above the down tube, internal routing and I believe the top and down tube were crimped on the sides. It was a candy apple red transparent over chrome with yellow decals (thus the yellow bar tape and housing). I also got a deal on it for knowing someone who worked at Nashbar.
@Gianni sorry, that’s right here in town.
Here are a couple of my favourites from the Alpine Cogal…….
Frank told me that our next climb would “kick my ass”! He was nearly right!
Malted recovery beverage consumption….
So after a year my youngest daughter would rather forget, one Saturday night she agrees to hit the bitumen.
To the shed to give the love to #2.
Sunday morning was fabulous and now regular. Last ride, she took off to chase down some pretender – a little bit of V?
Title has to be:
“Tomorrow we ride!”
@frank
Will I never learn…
@Stu
Might try a photo!

After over 10 years since last race, happy to pin on a number for a Glenvale Crescent crit at the start of the year.
The green ‘helmet’ band is to identify a ”unkown/new rider’.
Proud to watch my Pedalwan go from last Christmas;
To now, “slow down sport!”
I just love this image!!!
Paralympian João Correa with his handbike and me in an endless long road during his daily practice. João will atempt to ride 124 mi (200 km) in less than 12 hours on april 2013. More on this incredible challenge can be found HERE.
@the Engine Is there a section for matched quote and picture? This would be in the running for that award.
I’m enjoying this thread so thought I’d sling my hat in the ring. All photos taken by me, description under each pic:
Rebecca racing along a random forest road in NSW, Australia carrying everything needed for 27,000km on the road.
Rebecca making a debut attempt on the Koppenberg.
Peter Sagan pulling a no-hands wheelie with 250 metres left of stage seven in the 2012 Tour de France.
Mark riding the Rainbow Road in the South Island, NZ. (Well worth a trip if you’re into MTB)
Cadel, Froomie, Wiggo & Nibali’s front wheel sprinting in the final 300m of stage seven of the 2012 Tour de France. The last time Wiggo would be needing that jersey ;-)
This is me on the Dragon Ride this year. 215 kms and 3,300m of climbing. This is the Devil’s Elbow, 20-25% in the main and 30% at this particular point.
Apologies for the lack of ‘V’ kit but if you look very closely, that’s a Velominati decal on the left chainstay.
Apart from people walking having been completely demoralised by my laying down of the V, the other reason I like this is, being the wrong side of 50, that without my specs I can convince myself that I’m 25 again.
Taylor Phinney squeezing out the last drop 3km from the finnish of the London 2012 Olympic Time Trial.
… and here’s Wiggo just 3kms from Gold. Did someone mention body fat?
….Last Lap. I love the face that the racer leading the chase on me is making.
@Mark1 Love the broken men in your wake, heads hung in shame, walking sadly….awsome
Me climbing Paris Mtn in Greenville, SC on a Wed lunch ride.
Two very personal takes on bike riding 2012, heaven and hell…

And here is the hell part..
I’ve gotten back into racing/riding after two years of Lazy. This year I managed to get time off work to attend and compete in all of the Cross on the Rock Races on Vancouver Island. While I didn’t fare well in competition I found taking my camera around the courses while others raced to be very rewarding.
I’ve gotten more photos and posted them up here http://www.flickr.com/photos/palleus/sets/72157631567018640/
@Stu
You’ve got to upload photos – you can’t copy and paste them…
@windy rider OK, but stil a small Adrian: Humerus is the bone from your shoulder to the elbow
