Velominati Super Prestige: Men’s World Championship Road Race 2017
Peter Sagan has undergone quite the transformation over the years; starting as a brash and disrespectful neo-pro, he’s blossomed into one of the most exciting and charismatic racers in the bunch. A sort of modern-day Mario Cipollini.
And, as much as I dislike seeing riders dominate and take the excitement out of the sport, I love watching Peter race and I expect that if he manages to pull off his third straight worlds title, it was be a spectacular feat. Besides, he looks great in his black bibs with the bands, and I’ve gotten quite used to seeing him in those colors, so I don’t want to have to adjust to seeing another rider in them.
And, everybody knows you don’t ride triples; win triples.
Check the start list and good luck!
@Cary
I remember reading some talk of the GC riders thinking this could be a WC for them. Froome, for example.
@RobSandy
he’s the stongest cyclist of this generation. as Eddy Merckx famously said regarding MSR, “it is only the very strongest riders that will be able to contest the longer races.” Sagan has more gas in the tank at the end of these types of contests.
@Rick
A lot of the time steephill.tv will have a highlight video that is sans commentary. Always worth a look IMHO.
@wiscot
That is great to know, thanks!
@Rick
They are usually listed as “Ambient”.
@TurboJoe
You nailed it!
If I had made a VSP entry, it would’ve been for Sagan to win. After that, I didn’t really care. After the stupid UCI/TdF decision to eject him from the Tour deBacle, he gets the last laugh by winning the Worlds and putting himself in the record books as the only three-peat winner. For him, the curse of the rainbow jersey is that he can’t get it off his back.
@chuckp
totally on point! he’s really a special rider. good that he’s achieved preeminence now that Cancellara and Boonen have retired.
THIS is the way to approach life! Birmingham UK, Birmingham AL.. what’s the difference!?

@Cary
I agree, I’d have done the same …………………………….. if I’d have had the money so to do, that is!
Me to Mrs T: I need to go to Hawaii
Mrs T: How come?
Me: Well I booked on the Mnt Haleakala road climb but I thought it was just up the Rhonda just past Ystrad by Nant-ddu but apparently it’s not. So I need to go to Hawaii it seems.
Mrs T: ……….
@Teocalli
Want to come cycling with me up the Rhondda tomorrow?
http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/15-675/
Have you seen the weather forecast?
@RobSandy
Well the forecast for here is not too bad……..
@RobSandy
Ah what a shame entries are closed………
@Teocalli
Bernard says you can enter on the day! 7am at Coryton if you’re keen to be soaking wet for 8 or 9 hours straight…you get free sandwiches at the end.
@RobSandy
Many thanks for your message. I am now off line but will be returning on Monday. I will pick up your messages on return.
Late to this party, but what a win!
I’ll never forget these three wins. Was there in Richmond with wife who was just a few weeks pregnant, now our son is around 18 months and if I’m working on my bike, demands to hold the wrench. He also LOVES riding around in his trailer behind the bike. He’s at a really fun stage.
Sagan is such an amazing racer. Hard to believe we get to see him doing this!
a good read on Davide Rebellin, as noted, most of these points apply to Valverde, too:

@Cary
Think you posted the wrong link

Not that the article on Lombardia wasn’t nice!
a great Lombardia today. Alaphillipe is really going to be something in these next few years. he and Gaviria have to be the most exciting young riders in the peloton.
Nibali really put it on ‘em today. i think he’s got, at least, a couple classics wins in him, yet.
@Cary
Was out and about and missed it. Shame no VSP.
Did you see De Plus’s crash? Ouch!
@RobSandy
has to be the crash of the year, even outdoing the Mont du Chat descent yatd sale at the Tour. word is, De Plus escaped serious injury, too. THAT’S good stuff to show the grandkids!
I’ve heard that J. Bakelants crashed at the very same spot with 7 broken ribs and 2 vertebrae as a result.
this afternoon, i watched nbcsn’s 2017 Fleche and Liege coverage. two observations:
1) Bob Roll’s insights are good, but he’s not a good broadcaster.
2) Valverde is a real badass, but it’s too bad Philippe Gilbert was damaged this year at Amstel. given his super form it would have been awesome to see him challenge for the win throughout the Ardennes classics.
@Cary
Bob is sort of a human version of Parkinson’s Law. When he has to make a point quickly he does so very well. When he has time to ramble he will do so. I used to watch his YouTube channel but had to stop because he took several minutes to make a statement that should have taken seconds.
Has ‘The Bikes’ and ‘The Rides’ gone to archive only (i.e. no posts) for anyone else?
Is this truly the end?
@RobSandy
I was going straight to archive this morning. Still am.
The V-site has had crashes and off days in the past but @Frank seemed to get a handle on things pretty quickly. I’m not confident though.
Maybe it’s time for a coup de grâce if all it is ever going to do is dribble on with a handful of people posting.
It’s frustrating not to be able to tell people they’re wrong.
@chris
What a shame. Well in that case I’m going to get a photo of my nearly-finished Progetto up for posterity.
ARSE
@RobSandy
Not able to post it?
@chris
Nope.
@RobSandy
Empires dissolve and peoples disappear, the V passes not away.
You could stick it on the Velominati FB page.
@chris
And just when the bikes conversation was getting interesting ? Was there a reminder that it was the same conversation being had for the umpteenth time ? And now… no bike fotos ?!?! NO BIKE FOTOS !? Ahhh man…
Anyone else having problems with the site?
@Rick
Yep, most of the site seems to be shut down.
@RobSandy
It seems a bit Anti-V but yes, there is a Velominati Facebook page. Here.
Not much on it apart from posts announcing posts on here and people complaining about missing kit.
@chris
I just had a quick browse and that’s the conclusion I came to!
wow. is this it, then?
@RobSandy
Thanks, hope it comes back soon.
@RobSandy
The is some great stuff in there. The two Keepers’ tours are well documented in the photo section.
@chris
Hmm – should we try a Non Keepers Tour next year. Some Italian Strada in Tuscany maybe?
@Teocalli
With the exception of the Ronde, next years calendar is looking very middle eastern.
There aren’t many places serving recovery beverages over here though.
@chris
I’m planning on the RVV too – entries open Friday morning.
Italy’s only a short hop from the Middle East?
@Teocalli
I was hoping you had been knighted a new Keeper after your 1-2-1 with @Frank last week? Anything come out of that?
@KogaLover
Frank fell off a ladder and broke his shoulder so didn’t go.
@RobSandy
As he said!
I love coming to this site and do so on a near daily basis. I’ll be damned if I’ll look at a friggin’ facebook page every day. I’m sure it’s probably easier to host and maintain, but this site is/was a special wee oasis for those who chose to come here. Throwing it on facebook just seems wrong.
I’ m picturing Charlton Heston riding horseback along a beach, and coming across a giant statue of Frank, head protruding from the sand…….
At least I have my V socks to remember you guys.
