Which bold rider has this stage circled in their tour bible? Wednesday July 18th, Stage 16, 197 km. The day after a the final rest day. A climbing day with two HC climbs followed by two Category 1 climbs and a serious descent toward the finish. The Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde: you better be a fearless climber and a good descender, but a better climber. This is not a stage for Sagan or Fränkie Schleck (sorry Frank). If Wiggo was going to have a bad day, this would be a special one to have it on. And this follows a rest day? Could the weather finally make a difference? Will the mad tacker return? Will climbers just try to survive this stage to perform on the fearsome Stage 17? More questions than answers in the Velominati Super-Bunker.
All VSP bettors better give an extra shake of the monkey bones before casting them down. Study them well. There is much at stake: Fizik R3s for the winner, 2 pair of DeFeet socks for first loser. The rules are the same as for the first single stage VSP. Points are awarded for correct place only. Delgado might have enjoyed this stage but don’t be like him.

its a killer tough pick, but I think 2 'wills' will prevail today over the purist climbers. Results in the past have been that the top 10 have been predominantly climbers, but Sky will have to ride like billy goats on speed, and I am not sure that putting Cav on the front to climb will enable Sky to maintain position, and Porte et al only have so many matches inthe box to strike.
Right from the get-n-go, there will be serious attacks, Nibbles et al will be in the mood to break legs, and they will. BMC will make the customary sign in sheet and cuddles will be wheelsucking the rest of the ride in. But the others, are hungry, and after the first descent, they peloton will split all over, and eventually I think Sky will struggle to keep composure.
Nonetheless, Jurgen I think will make a great effort and dig for serious time, solidifying himself tomorrow, and we will see a pure climber who is a non threat make a lone wolf ride in. Whats the chance Froome could end up on yellow tomorrow?

FIIK.
But it will be fun to see a few turn themselves inside out and a few explode. Once I get home from my flat-as-a-pancake 16km commute.

No idea on this stage... but Nibali, who goes down faster than a Vegas hooker (to quote Frank), has to get something from this tour.
