This is the kick off of the VSP for women’s racing, though the women have already kicked it off with the Ronde van Drenthe in the Netherlands. Now it’s down to Northern Italy, Varese, by Lago Maggiore, but this is a climbers course, more in the mountains than by the lake. And yes, Sunday is also Gent-Wevelgem for women but Trofeo is part of the women’s World Cup so it is the race of choice (unless you are a sprinter who likes cobbles and wet Belgian weather).
If you fancy doing well in this year’s VSP then you had better be studying up on the women’s racing. Podiumcafé always has some well informed articles on women’s racing, in addition, velofocus is worth a visit. Last year’s winner was Elisa Longo Borghini. This year’s winner will have to be a strong climber, descender and if last week’s Milan-Sanremo’s weather was any indicator of anything, tough as nails.
If any well informed individual would like to submit a guest article on women’s professional racing in 2014, we, in the Velominati Super Bunker would be open to that. Lastly, we hate whiners, so if you get confused about your time zones and nap schedule, and miss placing your picks, Rule #5. Start list is here.

@Ron O.K. I apologise. I expressed myself clumsily. Like everyone here, I would like to spend more time on this site and learn more about being a Cyclist. My 'Real Life' reference was to all things outside of this virtual space, including striving to become a better Cyclist by riding my bike as much as possible, which mean there is less time to get involved here.. My point was (and is) that if people happen to get involved through the VSP picks catching their eye then maybe that should be welcomed as a way of continuing to find more Disciples. I had missed the fact that the winner of the Veloforma frame from last year had ridden off into the sunset. That seems like someone being impolite and inconsiderate.
Mind you, riding off into the sunset on that beauty is a very attractive idea... I have absolutely f#ck all chance of winning anything - I would be better off employing the blindfold and pin method for my next picks.
@San Tonio
This might sound dumb, but then again I like the way dumb sounds sometimes. My brother-in-law, father-in-law (deceased) and myself have kept a puny silver cup as an annual competition to see who would take it each year. At the end of each hunting season the cup is handed over to the successive champion. The whole ridiculous race for the cup entertained every family holiday gathering and sparked exaggerated plans to win. I have been away from the "effort" to take the cup for 5 years (always cycling thru October), but the cup remains -- and it waits for my return. Would be cool if there were an equally ridiculous (handmade) trophy for the VSP to hand to each year's successor.
@unversio Dumb works?! If I win this year I will hand make a trophy to be passed from winner to successive winner!
Here's the sprint finish for the ladies plus the podium presentation.
Everyone should follow the Women's Cycling Tumblr as well; awesome source for this stuff.
